How We Research
Every guide here starts with one question: will this desk work for the person who is shopping for it? For computer desks, that means how big the room is, what goes on the desk and how much storage you need.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your room and your gear
A desk for a spare room, a bedroom corner and a living room wall each call for different shapes.
A desk that suits one room can crowd another. We say what to measure first, so you can check the space before you look at styles.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at width, depth and height, the thickness of the desktop, the frame, the weight limit the maker lists and where the drawers, shelves and trays sit.
We also check what comes in the box and how many steps the set-up takes. Makers describe their desks in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after setting a desk up. We look for patterns, like desks that wobble, drawers that stick, panels that arrive chipped or instructions that are hard to follow.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A desk that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Many desks also have look-alike versions with similar names, so we check each model and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and anything with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every desk we cover.
A weight limit is a limit, not a promise, so we quote the maker's number and name the maker. We write about size, layout and storage only, and we give no medical or posture advice.
Tall shelves and hutches can tip if they are not secured. Follow the maker's manual for set-up and anchoring.
Desks with built-in outlets or USB ports have mains-connected parts, so follow the maker's instructions for those too.
